Being the oldest social housing project in the world, since 1521, the Fuggerei serves its original purpose to provide a home for many people in need. According to the deed of foundation, the Fuggerei is meant to exist “for all eternity” and - if feasible - shall be expanded. Jakob Fugger’s descendants lived up to their responsibilities and managed to preserve and even expand the Fuggerei despite all crises over the course of half a millennium. How to proceed from here - “for all eternity”? The long-term evolution of the Fuggerei’s idea is the main topic of its 500th anniversary. Over the course of the following months, this topic will be illuminated and debated in various exciting formats under the subject “FUGGEREI NEXT 500”. At the end of the anniversary year in the spring of 2022, the results will be presented in the context of a festival with international guests and an exhibition programme in the very heart of the city - on Augsburg’s Rathausplatz (Town Hall Square).
