The doors of to the Fuggerei NEXT500 Pavilion were opened on 06 May 2022 by the General Secretary of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, Dr Gerd Müller, Mayor Eva Weber, representatives of the Fugger family and residents of the Fuggerei. At the invitation of the Fugger foundations, the Bavarian State Government and the City of Augsburg, 450 national and international guests attended the opening party in the Goldenes Saal in the town hall. Days later, EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, together with Minister President Markus Söder, Mayor Eva Weber and representatives of the Fugger family started the five-week festival programme in and around the Fuggerei NEXT500 Pavilion. In her address, the Commission President showed her conviction to the idea of establishing »Fuggereis of the future« globally and to this end cited a possible connection at the EU level with the initiative »New European Bauhaus«. Her clear message: »Europe needs more Fuggereis.«
