Bishop Dr. Bertram Meier opened the cycle of sermons and spoke on the theme of »developing spirituality« during the celebration service on 29 August 2021.
Selected preachers and speakers addressed the social challenges and made a substantial contribution with their different experiences, perspectives and ideas in six further sermons.
The sermons were held alternately in the churches of St. Moritz and St. Anna in the centre of Augsburg and in the Leonhardskapelle chapel in the Fuggerei. The Fugger Foundations thus honoured the anniversary of the Prädikatur-Stiftung für St. Moritz (Predicature Foundation for St. Moritz) and the Fugger family burial chapel in St. Anna.

»Strengthening self-determination and dignity«
Dean of the city Helmut Haug | 10/10/2021 | St. Moritz
Human dignity is violated all too often. What makes us human? Does creation have any specific dignity? Dean Haug addressed these important questions in his sermon.
»Overcoming need«
Regional Bishop Axel Piper | 14/11/2021 | St. Anne's
Any one of us may experience a situation or circumstances we cannot cope with loneliness. What can help offer in terms of self-help? In his sermon, Axel Piper, the Protestant regional bishop, gave a voice to people who are on the margins of society and showed that housing is an existential condition for a life of self-determination.
»Create living space«
Canon Dr. Andreas Magg | 06/02/2022 | St. Moritz
Dwelling, living space, home - we have many names for the places where we live. Creating, protecting and preserving a space is one of the challenges facing society in our time. Dr. Andreas Magg has a very personal history with the Fuggerei, having served as the pastor for St Mark's in the Fuggerei from 2013 to 2019.
»Creating sustainability«
Dean of the city Susanne Kasch | 27/03/2022 | St. Anne's
What sustains us in our lives if there is nothing that fills us with awe and wonder? Retired Dean of the city Susanne Kasch explored the complex issue of sustainability in the context of the Fuggerei Foundation's claim to eternity. Her sermon placed the issue of sustainability in different contexts, for example regarding our own transience, memory or the finite resources of our Earth.
Dean Kasch was unable to attend on 27 March 2022, and her sermon at St Anne's was delivered by Mrs Barbara Jekeli.
»Providing security«
Herrmann Bredl | 28/03/2022 | Leonhard's Chapel in the Fuggerei
Experiencing and providing security is fundamental against the backdrop of current world events. Security also plays an important role in Hermann Bredl's family history. The anti-Semitism officer for the Jewish community of Swabia in Augsburg highlighted this in his sensitive and intelligent lecture. He placed the story of his own family from multiple perspectives with respect to the history of the Fuggerei.
»Guaranteeing humanistic values«
Dean of the city Michael Thoma | 08/05/2022 | St. Anne's
Dean of the city Michael Thoma rounded off the cycle with his sermon. The speaker of the Round Table of Religions explored the values that determine our shared life today and proposed how a "Fuggerei of the future" could guarantee humanistic values such as love, justice, non-violence, tolerance, dignity and freedom.
